Ignition switches can wear after many years of use, especially on vehicles with heavy key bunches, stiff barrels or high-mileage everyday use.

Common fault signs

No ignition lights, intermittent power, key turns but ignition does not switch on, accessories cut out, or the vehicle only starts after moving the key position.

Switch, barrel or housing?

Customers often confuse a failed ignition switch with a worn ignition barrel or damaged housing. The switch is the electrical part; the barrel and housing are the mechanical parts the key turns in.

Fitting advice

Ignition parts should be fitted carefully to avoid damage to the key, housing, wiring or immobiliser components. If unsure, use a professional auto locksmith or technician.

To help eliminate the switch from the housing or barrel, the electrical switch can often be removed from the rear of the ignition housing. If the key was not turning before, but turns correctly once the switch is removed, the issue may be with the switch or the way it is loading the housing. If the key still will not turn, the barrel or ignition housing may be at fault instead.

Diagnostic note: If the key turns fully to ON but the ignition still does not power up, the fault could be the ignition switch, immobiliser, BCM, ECU, wiring, fuse/relay issue or another electrical fault. A full diagnostic check is recommended.
